Sunday Sermon Snips
There have been plenty of people who have compared life to a rollercoaster. Things may be headed up or they may be headed down. You might be living a “mountaintop experience” or struggling in a deep, dark valley. As the saying goes, “Nothing is permanent except change (Heraclitus?).”
Have you found that sometimes your most difficult times come on the heels of great victory? The rollercoaster makes it to the top and you can see for miles and then suddenly you find yourself plummeting right back down. While this may by thrilling and provide a great feeling on a rollercoaster, it’s not so pleasant when it happens in our lives.
In 1 Kings 19, Elijah hits a rough spot and starts running from his problems. One of my favorite lines from Sunday was something to the effect, “When you’re down in a hole, stop digging!” God captured Elijah’s attention and helped him to realize that his problems did not catch God off guard and they were not too big for Him to handle. Elijah should simply go back the way he came. He should return to where he was supposed to be, where he was being used to achieve God’s purposes.
What fears or circumstances are currently causing you to run? Why does your situation seem hopeless? What will it take for God to get your attention? What will it take for you to “stop digging” and “go back?” What hope do you have if you do return to the place where God wants you?
